AB Provincial Trials

March 7, 2023

2.5 days of sharp swimming, great cheering, and fast racing…. Alberta Provincial Trials were a hit.

Over 300 athletes from across the province showed up to MNP for the racing – a meet run by a fantastic crew of our very own parent volunteers. Running a swim meet is an elaborate production and UCSC put on quite the show while hosting this past weekend.

Athletes… if you haven’t said THANK YOU lately to the parents that drive you to those early morning practices, have snacks ready in the car, and are your #1 fans, now would be an excellent time.

We had a great mix of first-time AB Trials qualifiers, some knowing what this meet is all about, and some looking to earn their spot at Provincial Champs next weekend.

Friday night’s session included some 50s, 100s, the time final 400s, and the 4x50 free relay. There was a great energy in the building as the first heats of the meet kicked off. Some nerves for sure, but also lots of excitement – all the athletes were ready to go. Saturday and Sunday were full of busy mornings with lots of awesome races. Athletes elevated at night to produce even greater performances.

Within the first hour of the meet, Karah Petersen punched her ticket to Champs grabbing her 2nd qualifying time in the 50 freestyle, and then – just in case – she won her 400 Free later in the session to further secure her spot at Provincial Champs.

Throughout the weekend, 14 other UCSC swimmers joined Karah and punched their tickets to Edmonton:
Austin Ma, Brooke Rousselle, Carys McLean, Callahan Leask, Demi Wilson, Georgie Dacosta, Jude Canji, Julia Wagner, Justin Nguyen, Lucy Hassett, Sophia Zhou, Sophie Smith, Tania Bakhshi, Yueting Liang

It was a big weekend with BIG energy and some of the best swims of the year. Way to go Dinos!
