EKI Recap

July 17, 2024

104 Dinos made the drive to Edmonton for a weekend of racing at EKI. After a month of water restrictions and altered training, it was refreshing to get back to "normal" and kickstart the last month of the season with LOTS of time in the water over four days of racing.

One of our proudest accomplishments of the weekend... EKSC awarded the "clean team" prize each day to the team with the cleanest space. UCSC was the day 1 winner! Although we were the Day 2 runner-up, we sadly didn't repeat... but we proudly displayed our trophy for the day we had it!

With swimmers having varied amounts of training throughout June, athletes needed to explore what success looked like for them in each race. Some got outside their comfort zone with new or bold tactics and others found a few key points to focus on. Regardless of the outcome, athletes were able to explore what they wanted to refine before heading back to the final piece of training for the year.

Each day, the Currie Cup was awarded to the athlete whose performance ranked them highest based on World Aquatics Points. Never heard of World Aquatics Points? Check it out here -- every swimmer gets a "score" each time they swim through this system. Our Currie Cup winners included Sienna Rodgers, Aiden Norman, Laon Kim, and Katie Graboski.

Throughout the weekend, Yianni Mylonas, Joe Dong, and Chris Zhang punched their tickets to Nationals later this month as new Canadian Junior Championship qualifiers!

Dinos found the joy in being part of a team this weekend. Swimmers stayed engaged in the meet, supporting each other, recognizing the little wins, and drawing on the group's energy to elevate their own performances. If this is a preview of what's to come later this month, it's sure to be a stellar end to the season.

We have a big group of graduating Dinos this year and EKI marked the end of club swimming for Katie Graboski, Sydney Stewart, and Kealeigh McLeod. This definitely isn't the last we'll see of them as they kick off their varsity careers with Canadian Universities in the fall. We're so lucky to have had these athletes come up through the club, watching them grow and sharing their excitement for their new adventures.

One meet left to go in the 2023-24 season... Go Dinos Go!
