UCSC Grand Prix

February 7, 2024

We hosted our annual UCSC Grand Prix meet this weekend, and it was a huge success. With 250 UCSC
swimmers on deck throughout the weekend, it was a busy one from top to bottom of the program! A
unique meet format with some short course racing, some long course, some events being timed final,
while others were prelims and finals. It sure kept everyone on their toes, and the swimmers managed
themselves remarkably well.

The meet kicked off with two successful provincial record attempts. Congrats to Kinnon Sen for breaking
the 13-year-old 100m back (SC) provincial record, as well as Christine Zhou, Hayleigh Haines, Ranumi
Eashwarage, and Meaghan Sutherland for breaking the provincial record in the 13-14 4x50 Medley (SC)
relay.

Club record breakers in their respective age groups were Aaron Xiao in the 50 back (SC), Kinnon Sen in
the 50 back (SC), Laon Kim in the 50 breast and 400 IM (SC), as well as Alexis Yuan in the 100 fly (LC), and
Sienna Rodgers in the 100 back (LC).

In addition to records, there were LOTS of fast swims and countless best times. Many young swimmers
doing events for the first time, like braving the 400 frees and swimming them boldly. The veteran
swimmers also pushed themselves outside of their comfort zone, doing longer events that are not in
their typical lineups. They were also able to rehearse some of their regular events, testing out new race
plans and race tactics. Lots of fun was had, tons of loud cheering were heard, and support of one
another was felt. Congrats to all those who attended the Grand Prix!

The meet served as a springboard for this cycle, as we head into a very busy couple months of racing.
Many of the TREX swimmers are back in action this weekend at the Timmermans swim meet, while the
development program heads to the Crazy Hat Fundamentals meet.

Finally - a huge thank you to all officials and volunteers for making these meets possible for the
swimmers! Your help doesn’t go unnoticed.
