Development Program Head Coach
Michelle Downey
Michelle Downey is the Head Coach of UCSC's Development Programs.
Michelle has been coaching in Calgary since 2008, holding roles from Lead Group Coach to Assistant Head Coach. She brings a strong background in the LTAD model and multisport programming, with experience developing and running programs in climbing (2004–2013) and swimming (2008–present). Michelle is also trained as a gymnastics instructor and has found her passion in teaching the fundamentals to the youngest swimmers, ensuring they build the strong foundation needed to excel throughout their careers.
As an athlete, Michelle represented Canada internationally and trained at the High Performance Centre in Vancouver before retiring from competitive swimming in 2005. She holds a business degree from Mount Royal University and is the proud mother of two energetic children.
In addition to her work on deck, Michelle has contributed to the broader Canadian coaching community, most recently leading the 2025 CSCA Grassroots Development Series, where she facilitated conversations on development programs with coaches from across the country.
